Wash Greener: Simple Swaps
As we try to become better at preserving the earth, there are simple steps we can take to start to do our part. I want you to join me in some simple swaps we can make weekly or monthly to reduce waste and pollution to the earth.
Today we’ll start with something very simple: Laundry Detergent.
Unfortunately, laundry detergents may have an even bigger carbon footprint than our vehicles. Crazy right? Traditional detergents contain phosphates that don’t completely biodegrade and can lead to depleted oxygen for fish and other marine life and in some instances, can have the same effect as acid rain.
Legit crazy. You can read more about how this works here. It’s important to note that using detergent will have some waste and an environmental impact but the idea is to minimize it until we have learned how to get to zero. Read more about this here.
In our house we use Ecos Free and Clear. It has a great mild scent, zero dyes, it’s plant based and it works. For stains that come with life, I use baking soda mixed with a little laundry detergent and a scrubbing brush or Jamaican blue soap. The detergent has fabric softener built in so my routine is now one less step. This is a simple swap you can make with a big impact.
Pree these additional benefits if its reduced environmental impact doesn’t impress you:
it is dye-free and perfect for sensitive, eczema prone skin (at least in my household)
it is paraben and phtalate free - no cancer-linked chemicals
it is majority women-owned
they don’t test on animals!
because it’s plant-based it leaves my washing machine so much cleaner without all that build up from petrol-based and animal-based fat.
it’s manufactured under zero-waste guidelines.
it is cheaper than Tide Free & Gentle and lasts longer!
So, have I convinced you?
