Hi.

Welcome, I’d love to hear from you so don’t be shy leave me a comment!

Sun Care for the 'Melanated'

Alright ladies, we’ve been told that the number one thing we need to do for our skin is to protect it from over-exposure to the sun. Our derms have been telling us to wear sunscreen everyday, even if we are indoors. This is especially tough for those with darker skin because no one wants to be walking around with that white cast that sunscreen is still famous for.

I went on a search for sunscreen that would:

  • leave no white cast

  • melt into my skin rather than sitting on top

  • not clog my pores

Here’s my roundup of my top 3 sunscreens who met the criteria:

#1: La Roche-Posay

Best Overall: La Roche-Posay

I use the SPF 30 water-lotion version. The consistency is a little runnier than the average lotion, but I think that’s what makes it blend in so well. There is virtually no smell, it doesn’t pill or clog my pores, doesn’t leave a white cast and I have had no issues layering other things on top of it. This is not the cheapest of the cheap but I do find that it lasts me months on end. You can pick this up at Fontana or on Amazon here.

Best Natural Glow

SuperGoop was genius in making an ‘invisible’ sunscreen. The gel-like cream comes out completely clear and leaves a natural glow to your skin. I loved to have it on hand in my purse for the days when I run out in a rush because I can apply it without even looking. You do have to be careful to apply it in thin layers though, because if you do it too thick, it definitely pills. I wouldn’t recommend wearing anything on top, and I’d also suggest you use a cream or lotion-type moisturiser instead of a gel moisturiser underneath because for me it pilled more with a gel.

I would repurchase the Unseen Sunscreen in a heartbeat to carry on the go. I got mine on Cult Beauty but this is also available on Amazon here or at Sephora.

Broadest Coverage

I had never heard of this brand before I started using this but the Ultra Violet Supreme Screen Hydrating Facial Sunscreen was included in a beauty edit box I got from Cult Beauty (not sponsored but I wish!). This definitely has that sunscreen smell, and you do have to work a little harder to blend it in without a pink cast, BUT the coverage is on the same level as a sunscreen you would slather on for a day in the sun. It’s a moisturiser and sunscreen in one so it is on the thicker side, but there are several good-for-you ingredients that help with improved texture and moisture retention. This is a little harder to get your hands on from Jamaica, but it is available at Sephora, Space NK, Cult Beauty and from ultra violette’s own website.

On my list to try next are the following:

  • Summer Fridays Shade Drop Sunscreen

  • Necessaire Sunscreen

  • Hydravizor Sunscreen (Fenty)

  • Black Girl Sunscreen (which I think I spotted at Fontana Waterloo)

I still buy and use my Neutrogena Sunscreen SPF 70 for full-on pool days but I have been trying Sun Bum Mineral Sunscreen as well. I do hope to find one brand for both face and body sunscreens with broad protection, but until then, I am more than happy to play guinea pig.

What should I try next?

til next time,

Jan
